Church's striking composition achieves an interesting austerity through its minimalism, each element's significance is in turn heightened. The scene is also reminiscent of Vincent Van Gogh's "Wheatfield with Crows," one of his last paintings. Both feature a path and while Van Gogh's disappears behind a bend, Church's continues up into the sky to join the birds.
