Bare branches and brittle grass poke out of a blanket of snow, all lying in the shadow of a large tree. MacLean's careful attention to detail translates every twisting branch of the tree to the flat plane of the shadow on the snow. As the viewer, our attention is brought to what is outside the frame of the painting, imagining the tree and the rest of the landscape behind and around us.
