"Walter W. Pranke (born 1925) Born in Czechoslovakian Sudetenland, the son of an artist and art professor. Receiving encouragement from his father he studied at the Dresden Art Academy and during the war travelled all over Europe including Russia continually sketching and collecting impressions of different people and regional scenes.

In 1945 he emigrated to the United States where he studied with Professor Scott of Utah. He filled several commissions for large murals in various government buildings in Texas and Oregon.

He returned to Europe in 1947 and studied further painting techniques in Hanover and Dusseldorf. Worked in various styles but decided to continue with figurative painting favouring a degree of impressionism.

In 1955 he came to Canada with his family and established a studio in Montreal where he worked and lived for twenty-five years. At first, he worked as a transport driver then as a stockbroker while continuing his painting in his free time. It was while he was working as a stockbroker that an enthusiastic patron suggested he should paint full time. Pranke took his advice and has never regretted making that decision. Since then, he has held over eight solo shows and has been interviewed on television and radio programmes.

Now a resident of Ottawa he has travelled extensively over eastern North America in search of interesting subjects especially historical sites, village, town and city scenes. He is partial to autumn colours but also paints his subjects in other seasons. His work has been reproduced on many Christmas cards and he has donated his talents for the decoration of Christmas cards sold to raise funds for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada.

Pranke is known for his masterful handling of his palette knife. His work has been available through the Koyman's Galleries Limited in three locations in Ottawa and galleries elsewhere.

In 1967, he produced three portfolios of reproductions of his pen-and-ink drawings of Old Montreal and Quebec City as his Centennial project.
