  • Biography

    Jean-Marc Blier (1921-1994)

Jean-Marc Blier was born in Saint-Éleuthère in Kamouraska, QC on July 24, 1921. His family moved to Montreal in 1929, where his father opened a cabinetmaking workshop. While working for his father, the renowned sculptor and painter Alfred Laliberté recommended that Blier pursue studies at the École des Beaux-Arts, where he would go on to learn painting and drawing.

In the early '50s, Blier exhibited at the Salon du Printemps, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Arts Club of Montreal, and the Palais Montcalm in Quebec. Blier then took over his father workshop until 1969, when he sold the business to return to painting. In 1970, he exhibited at the Center d'art du Mont-Royal, and he would continue on to show three to four times a year across the country. In the 1970s, he established his studio at his residence in the scenic Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville area.

Inspired by nature and season, Blier's landscapes celebrate the beauty and richness of the natural world – its colours, textures, and contrasts. He would travel to the regions he loved, capturing the landscapes of the Côte-Nord, Gaspésie, Laurentides and Charlevoix.
