    Istvan Porubsky (1931-2016)

Also known as Ivan Porubsky, and Uncle Potyka.

"Istvan Porubsky, although the son of one of Hungary's greatest sculptors and the descendant of a line of renowned artists going back three hundred fifty years, was penniless and near death after escaping from Hungary during the revolution. His present work displays the remarkable transformation that has occurred in his mood since 1956.

Born in Budapest, he lived through the Nazi tyranny and became a Freedom Fighter during the revolution. He escaped to Canada and spent several years in hospitals while his wounds were healing. It was during this hospitalization that he resumed painting, having studied in Budapest. He completed his art training at McGill University in Canada and with the help of the Canadian government soon became well known in Canada.

Although basically a naturalist, he enjoys using a palette knife to build up a thick texture. He uses this technique in combination with brushwork to create a modern effect. His main themes are Canadian and American western landscapes, and Eastern Canadian township scenes. These paintings show the calm and pease that has entered the mood of Istvan.

He feels strongly that life is too hurried and people have too many worries on their minds. He hopes that anyone buying his paintings will come home after a hectic day and be able to relax and achieve serenity with the help of his paintings."
