  • Biography

    Gabriel Dauchot (1927-2005)

Gabriel Dauchot was born on May 10, 1927 in Gargan-Livry near Paris, France. At the encouragement of his parents, he began painting at the age of fourteen and enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in 1942. Afterwards, he studied under Yves Brayer for one year, and under Othon Friesz. He was also inspired by the work of Chaïm Soutine and Maurice Utrillo. Dauchot participated in the Salon d'Automne at the age of 18 in 1944, and continued to show in various salons and in the École de Paris exhibitions. His first solo show was at the Galerie Granoff in 1945, then at Galerie Cardo in 1947. He received the Prix de la Société des Amateurs et Collectionneurs in 1951. Special exhibitions of his work were held in Los Angeles, New York, Geneva, Zurich, and Basel. In 1953, Edward G. Robinson sponsored a Dauchot exhibition at the Hatfield Gallery in Los Angeles. He is represented in the Musee d'Art Modern in Paris and in several private collections.

Dauchot worked towards maintaining a sense of humanity in his painting, remaining grounded in reality despite many of his subject's fantastical costumes. Throughout his work, there is a strong sense of his sitters' internal thought life being visually perceivable. He has been described as a painter of "tragic reality".
